Charleston Tells Storytelling Festival
In an age of Smartphones and Social Media, stumbling upon the Charleston Tells Storytelling Festival is a breath of fresh air. Storytelling is often an integral part of how many of us come to pursue genealogy in the first place. Maybe it’s a tale about our immigrant ancestors. Maybe it’s claims of royal or famous heritage. Or maybe it’s the simple stories shared every holiday get-together that leave our cheeks tear stained and our side aching from laughing so hard. There is no question these stories bring our past to life.
With great interest I interviewed Cynthia Bledsoe, Deputy Director of the Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) about Charleston Tells. Her enthusiasm for the event is infectious. Libraries have long been associated with storytelling for children. But in 2011, the CCPL began planning for an event to showcase the art form that is storytelling to adults and children alike. Many months of effort and promotion culminated in the inaugural Charleston Tells 2013.
Back for its second season, Charleston Tells 2014 hosts a bevy of nationally recognized storytellers offering comedy, life lessons, folktales and even ghost stories. Come be entertained and inspired by those who take storytelling to a whole new level. Then, just maybe, the next time you start talking with friends and family about your latest family history find, you’ll inspire them to tell their own story.
